It’s a natural and common feeling to get bored of your work. Finding the motivation to get back into work can be really difficult. Here are some of the tricks that I use to try and find motivation to get back into the swing of things.
If you’ve got a long to do list, break things down into much smaller tasks. This way you can tick items off and feel as if you’re making progress.
It’s usually the dull tasks I procrastinate about, therefore alternate between tasks that are interesting and dull. This means you’re motivated to finish a dull task more quickly to get on to the interesting work.
If you’re motivated by money (I must admit, I often am), then prioritise the tasks so that you do the tasks that make you the most money. So even if you don’t do everything on your to do list, at least you’re making as much money as you can be bothered to do. Do bear in mind jobs that need doing to sustain a level of income too, e.g. daily articles for a blog.
Set some targets to achieve by the end of the day and reward yourself for them. For example, treating yourself to a favourite hobby or meal in return for completing 5 tasks from your to-do list.
You might be lacking motivation because you might have been working too hard lately. Therefore having a break is a great way to escape for a while. Hopefully you can come back with plenty of ideas and feeling refreshed.
These are just a few of my tricks to motivate yourself. Please tell me what yours are!

Good tips Dan, self motivation is especially important if you are planning to work for yourself. In the 9 to 5 its sometimes easier to be motivated when you have a tough boss setting deadlines for you!
I always have to look at my tasks and ask
“Will this make me money?”.
“Is this task ‘maintaining the business’ or ‘working on the business’?
Far too often I think I am working and working really hard, when actually I am treading water constantly. I pat myself on the back, but I doesn’t GROW my businesses. I have to constantly keep myself in check.
Great post. I Recommend the book “Four Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferris. In the spirit of recycling, if you want to borrow my copy, then your more than welcome…
John, I find that a tough boss will annoy me, not motivate me!
David, sounds good to me. I also focus on what makes me the most money… that makes it easier to determine what progress I am making.
Dan - Email me your address and i’ll fire it your way..
Thanks for the offer, but it’s my birthday soon, so I’ve added it to my wishlist!
