What should I read your blog?

why

It’s nearly Christmas, so I’ll refrain from talking about 2009 goals (for now) or talk about Wordpress 2.7. For this week’s article, I thought I’d ask you a question. Why should I read your blog?

Today’s article is a short update regarding changes in my portfolio. I have sold off my BuxTo Payments site, as that wasn’t making me any more money. It was in profit, and made me about £40 in the end. I’ve also created 2 new sites, one that allows you to generate a gift certificate offering your time, and another that provides the latest news and information about indoor fireworks.

This article highlights 3 sadly common mistakes made by 3 businesses I’ve had dealings with in the last couple of weeks. Last week, MFI, essentially a bathroom and kitchen retailer, and Woolworths, a music/video/confectionery/clothes/toys/homeware/gardening/etc shop, have both gone into administration. I’ll share my perspectives on why I think they failed.

Additionally, I’ll share thoughts based on my dealings with a UK fudge company that was evasive about sending me their wholesale fudge price list.

Last week I received a letter from the Domain Renewal Group claiming to offer to renew my domain DailyEcoTips.com because my domain is close to expiry. However, it felt really odd, as I already knew which registrar the domain was registered with, and I had never heard of the Domain Renewal Group. Something smelt fishy, a quick google turned up lots of information about a scam.

I was recently offered the opportunity to review Richard Branson’s new book, Business Stripped Bare, and as a fan of Branson’s, I jumped at the chance. I’m usually very busy, so its rare I’ll make time for a book. However, I was curious to discover Branson’s style of business that had helped him to become successful.

Buy Your Own Name As A Domain Name

Whilst I’ve been pondering the ways I can exploit my experience and skills to make money and eventually escape the rat race, I wondered how I should represent myself. Having an online identity relating to you as an individual makes a lot of sense if your business is heavily related to you as an individual too.

For example, if you have a reputation as a public speaker, photographer, life coach, counsellor, or any other similar service, it would make sense to have a domain name that uses your own name.

I was looking around at dropped .co.uk domains recently, and I discovered a few potentially good domains, but not ones I could think of using in any sensible way. Therefore I thought I’d share them here on PowerDosh.com for free. If you register or use any of my ideas, I’d love to know how you got on. (I also wouldn’t mind a beer in return either, if you’re offering.)

How do you measure success?

So you’ve chosen to work for yourself. Be it for more freedom, the opportunity to make money from what you enjoy or the chance to make a real success of yourself in life. It’s fairly common knowledge that if you want to succeed, you need to set yourself goals and then go about achieving them. However, how do you measure if you’re successful?

Is being successful something you want others to perceive? Is it a standard measure that you need to meet? Or is it just something inside you that you want to feel?

Google Pagerank

This is going to be a bit of a rant. It’ll be good though. Honest.

It’s been a while since I cared about page rank. One of my earliest posts on PowerDosh was about how page rank (PR for short) doesn’t matter. I’ve since found DoshDosh’s excellent discussion of why it doesn’t matter too. However, some people will just not let it go.

So another mixture of useful tips and resources today. An inspirational article by someone with a long term illness that caused them to re-evaluate their life (in a way I did with my RSI), how to optimise your Wordpress blog for high traffic, how to recover unverified email subscribers and a little humour with some very unfortunate choices of domain names.
